August 12, 2025 - We are proud to announce that HERMON Heritage, commissioned by the Municipality of Maastricht and Maastricht University, is conducting a study into the revitalisation of one of the oldest theatres in the Netherlands: The Bonbonnière. This former municipal theatre is a unique cultural and historical landmark in the heart of Maastricht.
The Bonbonnière has a rich history. The building, originally a Jesuit church, was constructed in 1606 and converted into a municipal theatre around 1788. In 1877, a new entrance building was added, and it was given the name Bonbonnière, which loosely translates to “The Candy Box.” The current auditorium still exudes the atmosphere of its Baroque interior, with its rounded balconies, painted domed ceiling, ornate stucco work, and lavish red velvet. It is a monument that tells the story not only of theatre history, but also of the city, religion, and architecture.
In the coming period, we will carefully and thoroughly explore the opportunities for revitalisation. The preservation of cultural and historical value, the social function, and sustainable technical and financial feasibility will be at the core of this process. We look forward to working together with various stakeholders to bring this special place to life once again.
